Amy and Rogers's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson
I thoroughly enjoyed my first Matson read that I quickly obtained other books. This one, also a surprise summer read. The plot takes place just as summer begins and has the characters winding through America via a classic road trip. I'm jealous. I have never taken a road trip. Well, unless you count from Texas to North Carolina to a church youth 'camp' in 1994 - there were no stops along the way and the drive was awful.
Back to the book.
"Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew--just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road--diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards--this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself." - Via the synopsis on Good Reads.
My two cents so far...
There seems to be mentioned a perky, more upbeat Amy! that we have yet to meet. Kindle says I'm 32% of the way it. I doubt I will meet this Amy! character.
Mom planned the trip. Amy! would have followed the plans. Amy is channeling her more rebellious brother by not following the designated route.
I like that there are music mixes thrown in. I could join Amy and Roger on their journey, not only via pages of a book but also by song!
There was a quick passage that I wanted to quote that reminded me of another book but I couldn't find it. Oh well, the story continues.
